Chinese New Year Visit to Jementah

Gong Xi Gong Xi Gong Xi Ni... 296km from my place to this little town called Jementah... This is where my grandma-in-law stays... This is the first CNY visit to her place since exchanging marriage vows with my lovely wife in 2006. This year was more significant and meaningful to take the long journey, we brought new little member in the family along, Princess Estella.. She was the darling of the town... Every Uncles and Aunties, even the cousins took turns patiently to carry this princess..

I took this opportunity to travel to Malacca to take some photos and visit places.. Oh yar, its less than 60km from Jementah, but even so, it took me 2 hours to reach the coastal area.. The traffic jams is incredible, after exiting the North-South Highway, it took us 1 1/2hrs to travel 15km to reach the heart of Malacca.. guess what, the popular Chicken rice ball stall just sold the last plate of rice 10mins before our arrival.. Haise, we then turn to "He Ji" to ensure that my trip is not wasted..

Photography took over after the meal..

First day of Lunar New Year

Happy 牛 Year to all of my readers.... I was busy visiting my relatives the whole day and went back to perform my duty in the evening in camp.. All my relatives were excited and played with my Princess Estella the moment we stepped into the apartment...

I found one article from wikipedia which has interesting facts about Lunar New Year

First day of the new year
The first day is for the welcoming of the deities of the heavens and earth, officially beginning at midnight. Many people, especially Buddhists, abstain from meat consumption on the first day because it is believed that this will ensure longevity for them. Some consider lighting fires and using knives to be bad luck on New Year's Day, so all food to be consumed is cooked the day before. Most importantly, the first day of Chinese New Year is a time when families visit the oldest and most senior members of their extended family, usually their parents, grandparents or great-grandparents. Some families may invite a lion dance troupe as a symbolic ritual to usher in the Lunar New Year as well as to evict bad spirits from the premises. Members of the family who are married also give red packets containing cash to junior members of the family, mostly children and teenagers. While fireworks and firecrackers are traditionally very popular, some regions have banned them due to concerns over fire hazards, which have resulted in increased number of fires around New Years and challenged municipal fire departments' work capacity. For this reason, various city governments (e.g., Hong Kong, and Beijing, for a number of years) issued bans over fireworks and firecrackers in certain premises of the city. As a substitute, large-scale fireworks have been launched by governments in cities like Hong Kong to offer citizens the experience.

Second day of the new year
Incense is burned at the graves of ancestors as part of the offering and prayer ritual. The second day of the Chinese New Year is for married daughters to visit their birth parents. Traditionally, daughters who have been married may not have the opportunity to visit their birth families frequently. On the second day, the Chinese pray to their ancestors as well as to all the sex gods. They are extra kind to dogs and feed them well as it is believed that the second day is the birthday of all dogs. Business people of the Cantonese dialect group will hold a 'Hoi Nin' prayer to start their business on the 2nd day of Chinese New Year. The prayer is done to pray that they will be blessed with good luck and prosperity in their business for the year.

Third and fourth days of the new year
The third and fourth day of the Chinese New Year are generally accepted as inappropriate days to visit relatives and friends due to the following schools of thought. People may subscribe to one or both thoughts.
1) It is known as "chì kǒu" (赤口), meaning that it is easy to get into arguments. It is suggested that the cause could be the fried food and visiting during the first two days of the New Year celebration.
2) Families who had an immediate kin deceased in the past 3 years will not go house-visiting as a form of respect to the dead, but people may visit them on this day. Some people then conclude that it is inauspicious to do any house visiting at all. The third day of the New Year is allocated to grave-visiting instead.

Fifth day of the new year
In northern China, people eat Jiǎozi (simplified Chinese: 饺子; traditional Chinese: 餃子), or dumplings on the morning of Po Wu (破五). This is also the birthday of the Chinese god of wealth. In Taiwan, businesses traditionally re-open on this day, accompanied by firecrackers.

Seventh day of the new year
The seventh day, traditionally known as renri 人日, the common man's birthday, the day when everyone grows one year older. It is the day when tossed raw fish salad, yusheng, is eaten. This is a custom primarily among the overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia, such as Malaysia and Singapore. People get together to toss the colourful salad and make wishes for continued wealth and prosperity. For many Chinese Buddhists, this is another day to avoid meat.
Chinese New Year's celebrations, on the eighth day, in the Vancouver suburb of Richmond, British Columbia, Canada.

Ninth day of the new year

The ninth day of the New Year is a day for Chinese to offer prayers to the Jade Emperor of Heaven (天公) in the Taoist Pantheon. The ninth day is traditionally the birthday of the Jade Emperor. This day is especially important to Hokkiens and Teochews (Min Nan speakers). Come midnight of the eighth day of the new year, Hokkiens will offer thanks giving prayers to the Emperor of Heaven. Offerings will include sugarcane as it was the sugarcane that had protected the Hokkiens from certain extermination generations ago. Tea is served as a customary protocol for paying respect to an honored person. Fifteenth day of the new year

The fifteenth day of the new year
This is celebrated as Yuánxiāo jié (元宵节), otherwise known as Chap Goh Mei in Fujian dialect. Rice dumplings Tangyuan (simplified Chinese: 汤圆; traditional Chinese: 湯圓; pinyin: tāngyuán), a sweet glutinous rice ball brewed in a soup, is eaten this day. Candles are lit outside houses as a way to guide wayward spirits home. This day is celebrated as the Lantern Festival, and families walk the street carrying lighted lanterns. This day often marks the end of the Chinese New Year festivities.

Reunion Dinner.. 2009.. Sending Rat home safely and Grand Welcome to Ox..

Chinese New Year or Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is sometimes called the Lunar New Year, especially by people outside China. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month (Chinese: 正月; pinyin: zhēng yuè) in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th; this day is called Lantern Festival. Chinese New Year's Eve is known as Chúxī (除夕, abbr. for 年除夕 Niánchúxī, Chúxì in Taiwan). It literally means "Year-pass Eve". Celebrated in areas with large populations of ethnic Chinese, Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbours, as well as cultures with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction. These include Aboriginal Taiwanese people, Koreans, Mongolians, Nepalese, Bhutanese, Vietnamese, and formerly the Japanese before 1873. In Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and other countries or regions with significant Han Chinese populations, Chinese New Year is also celebrated, and has, to varying degrees, become part of the traditional culture of these countries. In Canada, although Chinese New Year is not an official holiday, many ethnic Chinese hold large celebrations and Canada Post issues New Year's themed stamps in domestic and international rates.

Reunion dinner

A reunion dinner is held on New Year's Eve where members of the family, near and far away, get together for the celebration. The venue will usually be in or near the home of the most senior member of the family. The New Year's Eve dinner is very sumptuous and traditionally includes chicken and fish. In some areas, fish (simplified Chinese: 鱼; traditional Chinese: 魚; pinyin: yú) is included, but not eaten completely (and the remainder is stored overnight), as the Chinese phrase "may there be surpluses every year" (traditional Chinese: 年年有餘; simplified Chinese: 年年有余; pinyin: nián nián yǒu yú) sounds the same as "may there be fish every year."

This year, coincidentally, both my younger brother is visiting his Hongkong relatives-to-be and my Sis-in-law is going Eastern Malaysia for her Chinese New Year visits and I ended up having 2 feasts in 2 days..

On Saturday, its also a time to get together with my Grandma at my parents' place.. We had sumptuous dinner glittered with Crab and abalone as the highlight of our steamboat dinner..

Sunday was fantastic feast with roast pork and steamed prawns as my favourite..

Hmm.. As the tradition goes, we had lotsa surpluses..

Year of the Ox is going to be a good year.. Winning 4D, Bid Sweep and Toto all the way...

Estella got her passport

Personal passport for my Princess Estella.. I had applied for a passport via the net about 1-2 weeks ago, intending to visit relatives in Malaysia, Jementah, this Lunar New Year.. Somehow the photo printed on the passport seems uglier than the one that i had submitted.. Especially with the doctored "hair" on her head.
.

Look alike??

My first try at HDR

I have been scrolling through CS on HDR works.. The results seems amazing, with a tweak of the exposure, different results of the photo can be altered. Sometimes, the good photographer can make the photo look so painting like.. I thought it was easy, but never though.. I had tried floating platform, but the subject was cluttered by a lot of "accessories".. Hence, the effects was not what I had expected.. same thing for the little park outside my flat..

Finally, I thought this would looked better (If you think this is bad, then forget about my other works..) I went to Tanjong Rhu and took a few shots of the bridge linking to Singapore Indoor Stadium, toying with the shutter settings and got a few different exposures to create my HDR photo.. Cheers, more to come..

Manchester United 3 Chelsea 0 and Ronaldo lands FIFA Award

Manchester United 3 Chelsea 0... What a night of surprise.. Chelsea suffered their worst Old Trafford defeat in 15 years as United eased to a thoroughly deserved success after Nemanja Vidic had broken the deadlock in first-half stoppage time. Wayne Rooney added another just after the hour mark before Dimitar Berbatov completed victory for Sir Alex Ferguson's men near the end.

To add icing to the victory, Cristiano Ronaldo was named as FIFA World Player of the Year for 2008 on Monday and became the first Premier League player to get the award at a star-studded gala in Zurich. Cristiano Ronaldo gets his award from Pele.

The 23-year-old was in stunning form in season 2007/08 when he helped Manchester United to Premier League and European Cup success hitting 42 goals in the process, and after FIFA's annual poll of international team coaches and captains he has added the world governing body's prize to the prestigious Ballon d'Or which he has already received.

Ronaldo received the award from Pele, and said: ''It is an overwhelming moment and a very special moment in my life and I would like to say to my mother and sister that the fireworks can be set off now.

''I'm extremely happy, it's one of the most important moments in my life and I hope I can come back.''

Ronaldo, who also won FIFA's Club World Cup with United in 2008, faced competition from fellow nominees Xavi Hernandez, Fernando Torres, Lionel Messi and Kaka.

Messi finished in second place and Torres came third ahead of fourth-placed Kaka and Xavi.

Ronaldo becomes the first player from the Premier League to win the coveted title, which has so far only been awarded to players based at clubs in Italy or Spain; while Marta, Olympic silver medallist with Brazil, was later named the FIFA women's player of the year for the third successive time.

"There may be no English players here but I believe it's important for England that myself and Fernando Torres are here representing two English clubs," said Ronaldo before the ceremony.

"It is a victory for the English fans as well because the Premier League is strong, even though we must not forget the leagues in Spain and Italy remain strong as well."

Ronaldo dedicated the award to his family but also paid tribute to influence of United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

He said: ''It's a dream come true for me to get this award and I would like to dedicate this to my family.

''But it's also true that the manager always has an important role to play. It was a great season for me and for my club, and the coach was important for me because I learned a lot for him.

''His experience over so many years is of paramount importance - it's a privilege to have such a great club manager.

''This is the climax of a fantastic era for me. I'm happy and proud about what has been done by my team and what we have won. I am lucky to to be part of the history of a club like Manchester United.''

Ronaldo all the way...

First Weekend break from work in the New Year

Derby 1 - 0 Manchester United.. Manchester United loss brought reality to ground.. I seems to have lost contact with my team since the day serious photography came into my life.. The loss did not occur too much to me, I believed Manchester will overcome the deficit in the return leg..

My lovely wife brought the idea of visiting my parents at least once a week with my little princess Estella on Sat... My parents must have been missing her a lot.. My mum glowed with a huge smile on her face the moment she saw us (My Estella more, I suppose..) at her shop.. (She's retailing stationery business). She even brought the princess to show her neighbours..

Drop by Chinatown on Saturday night to catch a glimpse of Chinese New Year decorations and Pasar Malam.. It does not seems to be in recession for Singapore, the crowd is still as packed as ever.. My wife decides to cut the night visit real short, too many people bumping into Estella.. Photography has to wait..

So no photography, but there is photoshop... Happen to chance upon a website for photographer, digital-photography-school.. It is indeed a repository for photography stuff... Blogs, by I guess by professional photographer, from the basics of explaining what aperture means to post photography techniques using photoshop and iphoto.. Well, i always wonder how did all those photos uploaded by others in CS was so dreamy and amazing at times... Some of the effects can be achieved by magic of photoshop.. I tried a few techniques explained by the website.. For a portrait of my lovely wife and Princess Estella, that the photo effects was burst by the harsh flash and yellow lighting of the room.. after adding cool filter, Gaussian Blur, Emboss, etc, a yellowish background and faces with bright reflection of flash, turned into a white and dreamy photo for all to view.. There is really a lot to learn and experiment... It is not just D80 and lens..

Back to work in the New Year

Back to work.. And back to the insufficient rest routine, stacking only less than 6 hours a day.. Haise.. Always find it very hard to strike a work life balance in my current job, leave home at 7 and reached home at 10 plus 11.. Just dun feel comfortable with pending job left undone.. Maybe i should stick to one proposed plan instead of blowing my head off thinking of 2-3 choices.. But one choice means no choice.. Ha ha.. Just me.. Just me..

Photography will have to take a break first..

Botanical Garden

Went to botanical garden today to try out taking photos of plants and flowers.. Armed with only my camera with no tripod.. Taking still pictures will always be a challenge.. In this trip, I realised that although my kata bag is designed to convenient the photographer to keep and take the camera during shoot and movement, but it lack a good holder for tripod.. It just seems too troublesome for me to bring 2 bags along especially when i am taking public transport..

I am pleasantly surprised to see a lot of people picnicing at the lawn area near the pond.. Tried to sneak a few shot of them, but my lens cant zoom for an ideal shot.. Nonetheless, I went around trying to take close shot of plants, macro and waterfall.. Toying with shutter priority with white balance to capture the waterfall.. Not bad for a first timer.. Then i bumped into 2 teens who had dressed up like some japanese character, i supposed, for their friends to take some shoot.. I guess.. I went up to sneak a few shots before they leave the fountain..

After this trip, guess that my blog will take a holiday before i start another.. Work starts on mon after a very very long break..

2009

11am... a good rest from a late night of fireworks and blogging.. 2009 will be a good year ahead..

Ikea is a place of not just about designers' valued for money furnitures, it is also about good food... We love the restaurant's chicken wings.. Ikea was full of shoppers in this new year.. This is the first time I have ever witness the carpark board flashing "FULL" for both gigantic level 1 and 2 carpark.. We spent most of our time at the food haven before strolling down the halls.. I took this opportunity to snap 3 generations, Grandma, Ma and Estella.. lovely.. My mother-in-law is a super patient person, the best I had ever witnessed... My wife is really blessed to have a mother that has no grumble, always there to share her happy moments and woes.. She never complained about her sleepless nights during Estella first few months.. She would quietly take naps off sofa, floor when we took over her.. Respect..

Meet up with my parents for a buffet dinner at Clementi Woods' Sakura.. Haven seen my parents put on those smiles on their face for a very long time... Estella is the key to bring my wife and my mother closer.. My mother has been sewing beddings, clothings, etc, etc.. and always been putting on the smile with greater patience.. This is going to be a great 2009...
